Design patent

The term used in the United States to describe a patent granted on the ornamental design of a functional item. Its protection is similar to that of industrial design protection in Canada. Apple Inc. owns various patents regarding the design of the iPhone smart phone line and its related products. In India, a design can be registered under the Designs Act, 2000.
