Cyber Crimes

Recognizing that one of the inevitable consequences of the emergence and globalization of information and communication technologies was the misuse of the same by way of cyberattacks and cybercrimes, chapter eight focuses on the provisions relating to cybercrimes as provided under the Information Technology Act, 2000,  Indian Penal Code, 1860, Indian Copyright Act. 1957, etc.

The chapter starts with a comprehensive list of various cyber crimes under IT Act, 2000, their description and the punishment for the same as provided for under the Act. Following this, each crime is discussed in detail. This includes a brief background, an in-depth explanation of the sections relating to the crime, the essentials required to prove the same, landmark case laws and their impact on the concerned provision of the act, the standard operating procedure to be followed in case of investigations, etc.

In case of more technology-related crimes such as a denial of service attacks and hacking, a brief explanation of the technical working of the same has also been provided. Lastly, the best practices that can be followed by users to protect themselves and if not prevent, at least, make it improbable for them to fall victim to such attacks have been provided.
